Firewalls
A firewall is (usually) a piece of
software installed on your server which protects your network
from unauthorised access via the internet (such as computer
hackers).
In this instance, all internet
traffic would pass through the server before reaching the
internet, requiring two network cards to be installed in the
server – one to connect it to your main network switch and the
other to the internet router.
Firewalls can be in the form of
hardware, a device that sits between your server / switch and
the internet. These are usually more expensive and include
sophistication not always necessary for smaller networks.
