With the amount of data being held by companies on their servers increasing rapidly, the conventional on-site tape backup solution is being outgrown.

It is imperative that the entire contents of your server hard drives are backed up, so allow all software, user settings and data to be restored in one operation.

To upgrade even to a 100GB solution, including 10 tapes (to provide a two week tape rotation) costs around £1000, and how long will it be before this is no longer big enough? One alternative is to restrict what is actually being backed up, but this leads to disaster recovery problems. If you only backup your data, in the event of theft or destruction of your server, the server and your entire network will need to be rebuilt before you can restore your data from your backup tape, as the last operation.

What about Active Directory, which stores the information about your user accounts and access permissions to folders? What about email access in Exchange (which relies on the information in Active Directory)?

The answer is on line backups. In essence, each evening, changed and new data is transmitted securely (through encryption) over the internet to our secure servers, sited in an ex-NATO nuclear bunker, monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We can provide as much capacity as you need, and you can buy more capacity only as and when you require it.

The added advantage of this system is that you don’t have to worry about remembering to change your backup tapes each day, nor to check that the previous evening’s backup has been successful, nor ensuring you remove your tapes from site each day.

Everything is set up and monitored for you by us. In the event that you lose your server, as part of the recovery service we provide to you under your support contract, we will take a full copy of your data from our secure servers and install it back onto your new server, reducing the disaster recovery timeframe from 3 – 4 days to a matter of a few hours.

Even if you don’t require a full system restore, but have just accidentally deleted a single file, over the internet you can select the file from your on line backup and restore it to its original location, without having to call us to do it for you.
